16Days of Activism.
Tendai Madondo.   Monday, 30 November 2009.

Every year 25th of November to 10th of December are the 16days dedicated to the international campaign
on Violence against women.People from across the globe cease the moment, to highlight and protest against this complex and pervasive form of violence, which is a manifestation of gender inequality.

Although people are generally at risk of Gender Based Violence, women are disproportionately affected due to various factors which include Economic, Social, Physical and Cultural. This has resulted in various forms of violence including Female Genital Mutilation, Domestic Violence, Forced and Early Marriages, Trafficking, Rape etc.Rape has often been used as a method of war in conflict and fragile contexts.
During the Genocide in Rwanda, more than 250 000 women were raped the majority of whom contracted HIV.

Violence against women is a human rights and public health issue and can be tackled with dedicated resources and political, and public will.It devastates communities, and is costly at household and national level. It is a violation of various international instruments and can be stopped.
Each one of us can play an active role

Thursday in Black

Every Thursday people across the globe wear black as a personal and public protest against gender-based violence and inequality. It is a symbol of strength and remembrance, standing in solidarity with victims of violence and discrimination and demanding a fairer world for all.

Just by wearing black for a day, you will be standing alongside those affected by gender inequality. It’s a peaceful protest that puts the conversation on the table, audaciously suggesting that gender equality is essential to our fight for justice.

The idea for a new UK expression of the Thursdays in Black movement was born in Devon this year after firsthand encounters with people across the world - both victims and activists. Today the campaign focuses on ways in which we can all challenge the attitudes that cause discrimination, inequality and violence. It provides an opportunity for people to become part of a worldwide movement which transforms our outrage into action. From running events to recording albums, writing a blog or simply having a special Thursday wardrobe… together we are making a stand for justice.

Thursdays in Black aims to build a movement of people committed to gender equality. You can read more at http://thursdaysinblack.ning.com

There is no doubt that the face of Tallaght has significantly transformed into being a rainbow place with hundreds of migrant families living and working there. However, a lot remains to be done to ensure that

  1. children – who are the future generations are adequately educated,
  2. child care services adequately cater for the local families,
  3. disabled and elderly people have quality care and support,
  4. our infrastructure matches the local growth and that
  5. Tallaght is an all inclusive community.
